Windows 7 Fault Tolerant Heap Prevents Crashing

The Bottom Line Microsoft has been busy, and they’ve made some smart decisions programatically for Windows 7. The Fault Tolerant heap will help keep applications from crashing once Windows 7 recognizes a pattern, and applies a resolution. Procedures that may have crashed in the past, are less likely to crash in the future. For the normal user, should this be disabled? Absolutely not. The Details There’s a new feature in Windows 7 called... [Read More...]

Parcel Layout 101 (cul-de-sac parcels)

Civil 3D has a full set of automatic parcel layout tools, but you’ll find they are limited in the way in which they navigate around a building line at a cul-de-sac (or other concave arcs). This tutorial walks through the process of laying out parcels around a cul-de-sac using “old school” methods. The tools are quick, and strong, but because the methodology explained is centered around COGO, this procedure is accurate and can be practiced in... [Read More...]

Fade to Black

You can find any command in Civil 3D by typing a few characters on the keyboard and hitting the TAB key to “walk” through commands. I recently opened a drawing with an attached xref, but the xref was faded out so bad I could barely see it. There is a variable to control the locking and fading of objects when using the LAYISO (isolate layer) command, but I had forgotten the variable for xrefs. If you open a drawing that appears to be... [Read More...]

Renaming Assemblies

Naming assemblies always tricky – so many options. Renaming The Assembly The Information tab on the Assembly Properties dialog gives you an opportunity to rename your assembly and provide an optional description. In many cases, it’s ideal to rename your assemblies and include the station range in which they can be found along a baseline (for example, Patricia Parkway Sta 1+34.76 to 3+74.21). Page 380 in Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010. (Patricia?... [Read More...]
