Immediate and Independent Layer on/off
No doubt, it’s confusing. This setting is found on the Object Layers tab of the Drawing Settings dialog (right click on the name of the drawing as shown on the Settings tab or the Toolspace. To be clear, this setting is for working with layers in an on/off state as opposed to a freeze/thaw state; i.e. the command is on/off, not freeze/thaw.
First let’s make some assumptions:
Alignments on C-ROAD
Tangents on C-ROAD-LINE
Curves on C-ROAD-CURV
Immediate and independent layer on/off control selected (turned on)
Turn Off layer C-ROAD: No affect on tangents and curves, however labels will turn off (they are hooked to the object layer). To see the effect, however, you’ll need to force a regen.
Freeze layer C-ROAD: Everything is frozen or not displayed. Freezing the layer will have an immediate effect.
For more clarification (from Help): When selected: If an object layer is turned off, the visibility of object subcomponents is not affected if the subcomponents are on a different layer. For example, in a situation where an alignment is on layer C-ROAD and the tangents are on layers C-ROAD_LINE and C-ROAD_CURVE, if you turnoff the object layer C-ROAD the lines and curves will still display. However the labels will not display because the label object recognizes that the object layer is turned off.
Cleared: If an object layer is turned off, the object subcomponents are also turned off (or not drawn) even in situations where the subcomponents are on a different layer.
What’s the difference between freeze/thaw vs. on/off? Good Question! Objects on turned-off layers are invisible, but they still hide objects when you use the HIDE command. When you switch layers on and off, the drawing is not regenerated.
Layer Freeze/Thaw. Objects on frozen layers are invisible and do not hide other objects. Thawing one or more layers causes the drawing to be regenerated, and therefore, freezing and thawing layers takes more time than turning layers on and off.
