In an effort to help you learn key concepts and become more productive with minimal investment, I.II.I announces the birth of the Technology Suite at I.II.I.

In tough economic times, you need more choices; it’s often difficult for an employer to justify time for training, and we want you to have an avenue for finding answers when you need them. Our tutorials aren’t product demonstrations. They’ve been created in response to client questions and concerns arising from the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D, as well as other technologies, in “the real world.”

Alignment Masking

There are several new features for Alignments in Civil 3D 2010. Two of the features that will catch your eye right away are as follows:

1. The Create Alignment From Polyline command has been renamed to Create Alignment From Objects
2. The addition of the new “Masking” property

Much as they were in Land Desktop, alignments can now be created from objects – lines, curves, etc. What’s really interested me, however (and of course there is much more than this), is the ability to mask out portions of an alignment. The masking feature enables you to define ranges along an alignment where the geometry and labels are not drawn (but still exist).

You’ll find the Masking tab in the Alignment Properties dialog as shown above.

Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010

The Playground

Back when it all began, we had a playground. This now little known drawing was sort of a “cheat-sheet,” if you will, used for the creation of alignments. A portion of the playground is shown below:

I’ve posted the alignment playground for your enjoyment.

I liked the idea of the playground so much, that I’ve embraced the concept for everything from grading, to pipes, to anything in between. Not sure how to grade something? Try it in a “grading playground.” Not sure how pipes will react in certain conditions? Design in a “pipes playground” first. If you trash the playground, you’re not out anything.
